What is an Alaska Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale?

An Alaska bill of sale form empowers a purchaser to take on the responsibility of possessing a car which, as a result, removes ownership from the seller.

The purchaser accepts and carries out their end of the deal by compensating the seller using the requested method. Both parties place their authentic signature on the form to signify the arrangement, thus giving the purchaser ownership.

A vehicle owner can also gift the item to another person. Under these circumstances, the original owner must state the terms in the “Payment” section of the document and the car’s value at the time of the sale.

The DMV advises both parties to complete a bill of sale form. A signed form allows the merchant to prove the cessation of liability for the car. As a result, the seller does not have to pay parking fines or fix damages caused by the buyer post-sale.

How to Register a Motor Vehicle (3 Steps)

All operational vehicles within Alaska state borders must have a valid registration. Incoming residents must register at least ten (10) days before moving.

Non-residents can legally drive their car with an out-of-state registration for up to sixty (60) consecutive days. After that time, they must register with the Alaska DMV (§ 28.10.011). Exemptions include full-time college students and active military members.

New owners cannot keep the previous owners’ specialty or personalized plates. Instead, the seller must remove and keep them. The DMV will give the buyer new plates free of charge during registration.

Step 1 – Obtain Alaska Vehicle Insurance

Alaska drivers must have an insurance policy that satisfies the state’s minimum requirements. Having a plan ensures that the resident has coverage if an accident causing injury, death, or destruction to property occurs.

State law requires residents to have the following:

  • Bodily Injury or Death (one person): $50,000 per accident
  • Bodily Injury or Death (2+ persons): $100,000 per accident
  • Property Damage: $25,000 per incident

Step 2 – Submit Registration

First-time registrations occur in person. Applicants must make an appointment using the Online DMV Portal.

To prevent a rejected application, the individual must bring the relevant documents to the DMV and a valid payment form.

Step 3 – Renew Biannually

Rejection lasts for two (2) years and terminates on the last day of the expiration month. The DMV charges late fees to residents who fail to renew on time.

A buyer can acquire an unregistered vehicle through a private sale. In this case, the individual must pay first-time registration fees instead of making a renewal payment. Note that first-time registration costs more than renewals.
