Alaska Trailer Bill of Sale Form


An Alaska trailer bill of sale form authenticates the purchase of a non-motorized vehicle pulled by a powered vehicle. The sale occurs between two (2) residents of Alaska. The original owner reviews the document with the buyer and includes relevant information, such as a description of the trailer, its selling amount, and the transfer method.

What is an Alaska Trailer Bill of Sale?

An Alaska trailer bill of sale form serves as an indication that a seller righteously sold an open or enclosed utility trailer to another person.

By signing, each person implies they have agreed to the terms and provided truthful and honest answers in the form. Supplying incorrect information in a legal document, including a bill of sale form, is punishable by law. The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) also rejects forged or invalid documents.

Alaskans must register non-commercial utility trailers with the DMV for a $30 fee. A bill of sale is not required for registration, although it is recommended as it serves as proof of ownership. Once the first registration expires, residents can apply for a permanent tag (“Z” tab) for a one-time $25 fee.

How to Register a Trailer (3 Steps)

Alaska natives must register their non-commercial utility trailer with the DMV. Registration lasts for two (2) years unless the individual applies for a permanent “Z” tab.

Step 1 – Make an Appointment or Apply Online

Individuals registering their utility trailer for the first time must make an appointment through the Alaska DMV.

Residents living in an authorized borough (with a new trailer or a trailer that expired January 31, 2015, or later) can apply for permanent registration, also known as a “Z” tab. Permanent registrations can occur online rather than in person.

The following boroughs allow permanent registration for non-commercial trailers:

  • Fairbanks North Star
  • Hoonah
  • Kenai Peninsula
  • Matsu
  • Nenana
  • Sitka
  • Valdez
  • Yakutat

Step 2 – Submit Required Forms

The applicant must prove their ownership to the DMV using a signed bill of sale. In addition to this form, they must know the trailer’s empty weight and bring an accepted form of payment.

If an owner acquires a trailer with permanent registration, they must pay the standard registration fees ($30), taxes, and the permanent registration fee ($25).

Step 3 – Renew or Affix “Z” Tab

Owners without a permanent registration need to renew every other year (biannually). They must re-register before the expiration date to prevent tickets or fines.

Individuals with a permanent registration do not need to renew as long as they correctly affix the “Z” tab to the trailer and the plate remains readable.
