The Department of Finance (DFA) designates the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) as the primary agency responsible for handling car-related tasks, such as titling and registration. Upon completing the sale, both buyer and seller must notify the OMV of the transfer and submit all required documents. This procedure protects both parties, as the office maintains the most up-to-date and accurate records.


How to Register a Car in Arkansas (3 Steps)

Vehicle owners must obtain registration within thirty (30) days of moving to the state or purchasing their car. Operating an automobile without registration and title is unlawful, and individuals may face fines, offenses, or impoundment if they lack state certification (§ 27-14-314).

After the sale, the seller must complete a bill of sale, an odometer disclosure statement, and a release of liability, then submit these documents to the OMV. Consequently, they will no longer hold liability for the vehicle, and the new owner cannot hold them responsible for any damages following the transaction.

Step 1 – Insure the Vehicle

Arkansas residents must obtain an insurance plan that meets the state’s minimum liability coverage requirements, which include the following:

  • $25,000 for the injury or death of one (1) person;
  • $50,000 for the injury or death of two (2) or more persons; and
  • $25,000 for property damage.

When applying for registration, vehicle owners must present their current insurance card.

Step 2 – Complete Registration

First-time registrations can be processed in person or online. Applicants must provide the state with proper documentation and payment for consideration. If approved, the resident can operate the vehicle as usual. However, if the DFA denies the application, the individual must determine the reason for rejection and resubmit the amended forms and fees.
