What is a Montana Trailer Bill of Sale?

A Montana trailer bill of sale formally lists the details of a business occurrence between two (2) agreeable parties. It runs parallel to a title by including the personal credentials of the buyer and seller. The document also contains identifiers of the trailer, such as its make, model, length, width, year, axles, type, vehicle identification number (VIN), and other applicable information. By signing the form, the owner agrees to give the seller the trailer for the amount listed. Transfer happening by trade or gift requires additional data, such as specifics about the traded item or condition of the gift.

How to Register a Trailer in Montana

Montana law requires the permanent registration of trailers. Owners must display the applicable decal on their registered and titled personal property.

Title and registration must occur at the same time. Renewals are not required for permanently registered trailers.

New residents have sixty (60) days to title and register their trailer after moving to the state. Established residents must obtain the required information within forty (40) days, or they face a $10 penalty.

Standard trailers do not need an inspection in the state; however, homemade trailers require number assignments. The owner must complete and submit an Application for Montana Title (Form MV1) and Certificate of Trailer Number Assignment (Form MV39T).

Bring the Following:

  • Certificate of Trailer Number Assignment (Form MV39T), if applicable
  • Certificate of Sale (Form MV24AB), if applicable

Individuals must also pay the following fees:

  • 3% Administrative;
  • Highway Patrol Salary and Retention ($10);
  • New Issue Plate ($10); and
  • Security Interest Filing Fee, if applicable ($8.24).

The standard payment for titling and registration depends on the declared weight. It costs $61.25 to permanently register a trailer under 6,000 pounds and $148.25 for units weighing 6,000 pounds or more. These amounts are paid in lieu of tax fees.

To replace a title, the owner must mail the Vehicle Services Bureau with a finalized Application for Replacement Certificate of Title (Form MV7) and a $10.30 fee.
