How to Register a Trailer (4 Steps)

New residents to the state have sixty (60) days to register and title their trailer, with thirty (30) days to begin the process after obtaining their North Carolina driver’s license. If someone else is to handle the registration, the car owner must provide a signed power of attorney and a black and white copy of their driver’s license to the agent. The agent must then take the form and identification to the DMV. Dealers handle the registration process for their customers; however, buyers are responsible for submitting the required information to their local office.

Step 1 – Safety Inspection

A safety inspection is required at an authorized motor vehicle location if a trailer and its cargo weigh a combined total of 4,000 pounds or more. This inspection must occur before the trailer’s registration renewal, which can happen up to ninety (90) days before the license plate or registration expiration date. An inspection is necessary each year before renewing the registration.

Step 2 – Title

North Carolina establishes trailer ownership by issuing a title to the owner. The documents required for the titling process depend on whether the buyer purchased the car new or used or if they moved from another state. New vehicles require a manufacturer’s statement of origin (MCO) as the official transfer form, whereas used cars need a certificate of title from the previous owner. If an individual purchases the trailer through a dealer, the state also mandates a completed and signed bill of sale. All owners must fill out a title application (Form MVR-1) and submit the applicable fees.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) requires annual registration renewal.
