Step 1 – Title & Registration


To title a trailer in North Dakota, individuals must follow these steps:

  1. Obtain the properly assigned title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) from the seller or dealership. Ensure all relevant information, such as the buyer and seller’s names, addresses, and signatures, is included.
  2. Complete the Application for Certificate of Title & Registration of a Vehicle (Form SFN 2872), available online or a local motor vehicle office.
  3. Gather proof of North Dakota residency, such as a valid driver’s license, utility bill, or rental agreement.
  4. Prepare the necessary fees for titling and registration, which may vary depending on the trailer’s type, weight, and age.
  5. Submit the completed application form, supporting documents, and fees to a local motor vehicle office. The office will process the application and issue a new title and registration for the trailer.


To obtain a North Dakota title for a homemade trailer, residents must apply for an assigned vehicle identification number (VIN) using Form SFN 60467. Once the VIN is acquired, it must be imprinted in a specified area, confirmed by a registered company that maintains a positive standing with the Secretary of State and provides public motor vehicle repair services.

The company will then complete a Certificate of Vehicle Inspection (Form SFN 2486). The owner must also complete and sign the Application for Certificate of Title & Registration of a Motor Vehicle (Form SFN 2872). Once all parties finalize the necessary forms, the owner must pay the required license fees and a $5 title transfer fee to complete the process.
