How to Register a Trailer (3 Steps)
Nevada trailers require a title and registration through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Small trailers weighing under 1,000 pounds also receive small license plates. Residents must visit an office to obtain this information; the DMV does not allow online trailer registrations. Registration lasts for one (1) or three (3) years.
The vehicle pulling the trailer must have an insurance plan and movement permit. However, the trailer does not need insurance, smog inspections, or odometer readings. Homemade trailers have different requirements, requiring an examination before title and registration. The builder must contact the DMV before building, meet the equipment requirements, and complete a construction affidavit (VP 223).
Step 1 – Title
Residents who acquired a trailer privately must obtain a title within thirty (30) days of the sale. They need proof of the purchase, such as a bill of sale and payment to their DMV appointment. If they cannot title within this timeframe, they must apply for an extension. Dealerships must title and register trailers for customers, which relieves them of this responsibility.
Titleholders must safely store the document as they need it to verify ownership and/or transfer possession. They must apply for a duplicate before selling if they do not have the original copy. The title goes to the owner unless they have a loan on the trailer. In this case, the lienholder keeps it until the named person pays the remaining amount.
Step 2 – Registration
Trailer registrations must occur within the first thirty (30) days of ownership. Like titling, the owner must apply for registration if they acquired the trailer privately. Otherwise, the dealership takes care of the tagging process.

Step 3 – Renew
Nevada trailer registrations last between one (1) and three (3) years. Owners must renew before the expiration date to avoid penalties. Per state law, they cannot use the trailer on public roadways if it has expired tags.
Renewals must happen in person, as the DMV does not allow online trailer applications. If required, the individual must make an appointment and bring the appropriate renewal documents, such as a completed application, notices (if applicable), and payment.
