Colorado Vehicle Power of Attorney (DR 2175)
A Colorado motor vehicle power of attorney (Form DR 2175) entitles a person (the grantor) to designate another person (the agent) as their representative for vehicle-related matters. The form does not bind the agent to complete the duties for the grantor. Instead, it allows the agent to act in place of the grantor. The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires a signed and notarized motor vehicle power of attorney if the grantor is absent.

What is a Colorado Motor Vehicle POA?
A Colorado motor vehicle power of attorney allows someone to handle another person’s car matters independently. The agent must keep all receipts and disbursements obtained when acting on the grantor’s behalf. This process ensures that the agent stays within budget (if the grantor has given them money) or the grantor repays the agent for costs relating to the vehicle. The grantor must check the boxes associated with the powers to transfer to the agent; they must cross out the boxes related to the duties they do not want to give the agent.
Colorado law requires that the grantor include a termination date to limit the agent’s power. To transfer ownership and acknowledge the odometer reading, the form must: 1) reach its expiration date or 2) be revoked by the principal with a revocation form. The agent can only complete the odometer disclosure statement as the buyer or seller. An agent (or another individual) acknowledging the odometer reading cannot sign as the buyer and seller using a motor vehicle power of attorney. Alternatively, the grantor must complete and sign a DR 2174 (Secure Power of Attorney form).

Step 1 – Grantor and Agent Full Names
Introduce each person granting authority (grantor) and the representative’s name (agent) on the lines provided. Their names must match their state-provided identification.
Step 2 – Authorized Acts
Select the boxes to allow the agent to complete a task; cross out the powers they cannot perform.
Step 3 – Car Information
Write the expiration date for the powers indicated above. Then, input the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), Year, Make, and Model.
Step 4 – Grantor Personal Details
Fill out identifying information of the grantor, including the Colorado driver’s license or ID number, expiration date, and date of birth.
Step 5 – Signatures of Grantor and Notary Public
This form requires notarization. Print and sign the grantor’s name in the notary’s presence, and write today’s date.
